CERN, Consciousness, and the Strange Feeling That Something Has Changed


There are moments when I sit quietly and wonder whether humanity is living through one of those rare turning points that future generations will recognize long before we can. It is easy to dismiss such thoughts as imagination or nostalgia, but I cannot ignore the growing sense that something fundamental has shifted. The world certainly feels different than it did only a few decades ago. Society appears increasingly polarized. Technology advances faster than our ability to adapt to it. Artificial intelligence is beginning to rival human creativity. Reports of unidentified aerial phenomena have entered mainstream discussion. Near-death experiences, consciousness research, and ancient spiritual traditions are receiving renewed attention. Even among ordinary people there seems to be an unshakable feeling that reality itself has become stranger. Naturally, the question arises: has something actually changed, or have we simply become more aware of a reality that was always there?

This question came to mind again as I listened to discussions surrounding CERN and the Large Hadron Collider. Here is perhaps the most sophisticated scientific instrument humanity has ever constructed, capable of recreating conditions that existed fractions of a second after the Big Bang. Physicists built it to answer some of the deepest questions imaginable. What gives particles their mass? How did the universe begin? Are there undiscovered particles? Could there be hidden dimensions? These are not trivial questions. They strike at the very foundation of existence itself. When I hear scientists speak about anomalies, unexpected measurements, or hints that the Standard Model of physics may be incomplete, I cannot help but wonder what lies beyond the boundaries of our current understanding.

At the same time, I recognize the importance of intellectual honesty. There is no scientific evidence that the Large Hadron Collider has altered reality, opened portals into other dimensions, shifted timelines, or somehow caused society to become more chaotic. Those ideas capture the imagination, but they remain speculation. The collider has not been shown to change human consciousness or reshape the fabric of everyday life. If such dramatic effects existed, they would almost certainly be measurable by scientists around the world. They are not. It is important to acknowledge that distinction because curiosity without discipline quickly becomes fantasy, and fantasy contributes nothing to our search for truth.

Yet dismissing the question entirely may also be premature. Science itself tells us that our present understanding of the universe is incomplete. Physicists openly acknowledge that the Standard Model cannot explain dark matter, dark energy, gravity, or why the constants of nature possess the values they do. In other words, we know there are missing pieces. History repeatedly reminds us that scientific revolutions often begin with anomalies that refuse to disappear. Tiny inconsistencies eventually become doorways into entirely new ways of thinking. Newton's universe gave way to Einstein's. Classical physics gave way to quantum mechanics. Each revolution expanded our understanding while simultaneously revealing how much we did not know before.

Perhaps the more interesting question is not whether CERN changed reality, but whether instruments like the Large Hadron Collider are beginning to reveal that reality itself is deeper than our present models allow. That possibility fascinates me because it resonates with questions I have been asking for years. What if consciousness is not a byproduct of matter but one of the fundamental ingredients of existence? What if information is more fundamental than particles? What if space and time are not the stage upon which reality unfolds but are themselves emergent properties arising from something more profound? These questions are no longer confined to mystics and philosophers. Increasingly they are appearing in serious scientific conversations, albeit in very different language.

As I reflect on these possibilities, I also recognize another explanation that deserves equal consideration. Perhaps the world has not become stranger at all. Perhaps our awareness has simply expanded. Fifty years ago, most people knew only what happened in their own communities. Today we carry the entire planet in our pockets. Every conflict, every natural disaster, every political crisis, every scientific breakthrough, and every unexplained event reaches us within minutes. The sheer volume of information creates the impression that reality itself has accelerated. It may be that the human nervous system was never designed to process the experiences of eight billion people simultaneously. What feels like an increasingly chaotic universe may, in part, be an increasingly connected one.

Still, there remains something that continues to capture my imagination. Across disciplines that rarely speak to one another, I notice recurring themes. Quantum physics increasingly emphasizes information over material objects. Neuroscientists struggle to explain consciousness. Philosophers debate whether mathematics is discovered or invented. Mystics have long insisted that reality is fundamentally mental or spiritual. The Hermetic tradition declares that "The All is Mind." Donald Hoffman suggests that spacetime is not fundamental. Bernardo Kastrup argues that consciousness precedes matter. Federico Faggin proposes that conscious experience cannot be reduced to computation. None of these thinkers agree on every detail, yet each seems to be pointing beyond the purely material worldview that has dominated modern science for centuries.

This convergence does not prove that any of them are correct. Correlation is not confirmation. Independent lines of thought can converge without ultimately leading to the same destination. Yet I find it intellectually intriguing that so many different paths appear to be pointing toward the possibility that reality is deeper than matter alone. If consciousness, information, mathematics, and the fabric of the universe are somehow intertwined, then we may indeed be approaching a profound shift in our understanding of existence. Such a shift would not necessarily invalidate science. Rather, it would expand it, much as relativity expanded Newtonian physics without discarding it entirely.

Perhaps this is why I find myself less interested in sensational claims than in thoughtful questions. I am not searching for evidence that CERN opened a portal or that the world suddenly changed because of one experiment. I am far more interested in whether humanity is standing at the threshold of another intellectual revolution. The Large Hadron Collider may simply be one instrument among many revealing that our present map of reality is incomplete. Consciousness research, quantum physics, information theory, mathematics, and ancient spiritual insight may all represent different windows looking toward the same distant horizon. Whether those windows ultimately reveal a single landscape remains unknown.

For now, I am content to live with the questions. I have learned that certainty often closes doors that curiosity leaves open. The greatest discoveries in history were made not by people who believed they already possessed the answers, but by those willing to admit that reality was stranger, richer, and more beautiful than they had imagined. Perhaps that is where we find ourselves today—not at the end of knowledge, but at the beginning of a much larger conversation. Whether that conversation ultimately transforms physics, philosophy, spirituality, or our understanding of consciousness, I cannot say. But I have a growing sense that humanity is standing at the edge of something significant, and if history has taught us anything, it is that the universe almost always turns out to be more mysterious than we first believed.

And I can’t help but wonder, is it possible that the Hadron Collider opened a new door?

Here is the timeline:

·      2008 – The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was first turned on.

·      2010 – It began producing high-energy proton collisions for physics experiments.

·      July 4, 2012 – CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, one of the LHC's greatest achievements.

·      2015–2018 (Run 2) – Scientists collected a huge amount of new data. During this period, the LHCb experiment reported intriguing hints that certain beauty (B) meson decays might violate "lepton universality" (electrons and muons behaving differently than expected).

·      2021 – Excitement peaked when the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab (in the U.S., not at CERN) reported that muons might be behaving differently than predicted. Many news stories linked this with the LHC results and speculated about a "fifth force."

·      2022–2025 – As CERN collected much more data during Run 3, many of the LHCb anomalies became less significant. The newer measurements moved closer to the predictions of the Standard Model. The earlier hints have not been confirmed as evidence of new physics.
